Huron's Thompson signs with Buccaneers

Huron graduate Cody Thompson has found his next NFL opportunity. The wide receiver signed Wednesday with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The transaction was announced on social media by Thompson's agency, Equity Sports. Thompson confirmed the move with a post on X (formerly Twitter) that read, WeAreTheKrewe, referring to the Buccaneers' fan base. The former Huron and University of Toledo star fills a roster spot vacated by wideout Deven Thompkins, who was waived last week. Thompson has played in 12 career NFL games, all for the Seattle Seahawks. That included seven contests in 2023, when he made his first NFL reception, a 10-yard catch from Geno Smith in a Monday night game last October against the New York Giants. The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder also made two tackles on special teams last season. The Buccaneers have an established top-three receivers in veterans Mike Evans and Chris Godwin along with promising youngster Trey Palmer. Tampa Bay selected one wideout in the 2004 draft, third-round selection Jalen McMillan out of Washington. Tampa Bay is quarterbacked by Baker Mayfield, who signed a $100 million extension with the Bucs this offseason. The Buccaneers hold a mandatory minicamp from June 11-13, which will be Thompson's first chance to impress his new bosses.
