Vets groups host catfish outing

SANDUSKY — Local and state veterans service organizations collaborated on a fishing outing for veterans this past weekend. On Saturday, Sandusky AMVETs Post 17 hosted its fifth-annual catfish outing on Sandusky Bay, an event put on with the Disabled Veterans Outdoors organization headquartered out of New Lexington, Ohio. This volunteer nonprofit public charity started in 2015 with a mission of providing free outdoor events for disabled veterans. At this event, there were nearly 50 volunteer boat captains from across the state and 54 registered fishermen who hail from Midwestern states like Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Tennessee and West Virginia. The Disabled Veterans Outdoors — which receives applications from several hundred veterans each year — provides free lodging, food and meat processing for the disabled veterans, the release states. There is no license fee required for fishing in Ohio with this group, but veterans must pay for their hunting license and permit for deer hunting. How to participate Veterans wanting to apply to the Disabled Veterans Outdoors organization can get an application by emailing dvoveterancoordinator@gmail.com. Veterans will need these records to submit with their application: • A copy of their DD214 document • A rating letter, doctor's note or Veterans Affairs ID • All required licenses/tags How to donate All contributions to Disabled Veterans Outdoors provide direct support to its programs "for our disabled heroes," the release states.
