OH's Thompson makes history, 2 Rockets relays place

DAYTON — Oak Harbor junior Tyler Thompson made program history Saturday at Welcome Stadium in Dayton. Thompson became the first Rockets boys track athlete to earn three All-Ohio medals in a single state meet. The speedster placed seventh in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes in Division II. He was also part of the seventh-place 4x200-meter Oak Harbor boys relay. Thompson ran an 11.14-second 100 and finished the 200 in 22.60 seconds. The Rockets put up a time of 1:30.05 in the relay final. Wyatt Augsburger led off, handing to Carson Ridener, who gave the baton to Blake Nickel before Thompson brought the quartet home. Oak Harbor also had a pair of placers on the girls side. The 4x400 relay led the way with a sixth-place finish. Olivia May, Kennedy Slates, Effie Schulte and Olivia Cherry ran a 4:01.27 in the state final. That quartet will all be back next year. Schulte is a junior, and May, Slates and Cherry are all freshmen. They already hold the school record in the 4x4 with the 3:57 they ran to win a regional title in Lexington. Cherry also podiumed in her first state meet in the open 400, coming in eighth in 58.14. She also is the school record holder in that event already with three years to go after running in the 57s multiple times this season.
