Most stores compliant with underage sales rules

HURON — Several local law enforcement agencies performed underage alcohol and tobacco sales checks on Thursday. In Ohio, a person must be 21 years old or older to legally purchase alcohol and/or tobacco. Store clerks are required to ask for an ID to confirm the purchaser's age. In the jurisdictions of Sandusky police, Huron police and Erie County Sheriff's Office, 48 businesses were checked. Agencies utilized confidential informants to attempt to buy alcohol or tobacco. The informants were all under 21 years old. None of the businesses' clerks in Huron's or the sheriff's jurisdictions sold to the underage confidential informants. Three clerks at businesses in Sandusky sold alcohol or tobacco to the informants: • Sandusky Food & Wine, 300 block Fremont Ave. (U.S. 6) sold alcohol and tobacco to the underage informant. • Hy-Miler, 3000 block Venice Road, sold both alcohol and tobacco to the informant. • Glass N More Store, 200 block W. Market St., sold tobacco to the informant. The two clerks who sold both alcohol and tobacco were charged with underage sale of alcohol, a first-degree misdemeanor and underage sale of tobacco, a fourth-degree misdemeanor. The third clerk, who only sold tobacco was charged with underage sale of tobacco.
