Local students splitting $220K

SANDUSKY — This past weekend, the Sandusky-based Caryl Crane Youth Theatre sent four students to the MTC Triple Threat competition in San Diego. MTC stands for Musical Theatre Competitions. All four students won college scholarships to the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. In total, the competition handed out $380,000 in scholarships with $220,000 of them going to Caryl Crane students. Among the local winners: • Reese Wall, of Norwalk, received a $40,000 scholarship in addition to taking second place for overall teen ballad and second place for Broadway ballad. • Annika Campbell, of Tiffin, received a $60,000 scholarship in addition to winning the competition's callback competition and being named the weekend's elite vocalist. Annika also placed first in the categories of overall teen ballad and Broadway ballad. • Reese and Annika also won first place as a duet in the category of overall teen duet. • Tyler Kranz, of Perkins Township, received a $60,000 scholarship and placed first in every category he entered, taking home wins in overall senior Broadway ballad andBroadway up-tempo. • Claire Daugherty, of Huron, received a $60,000 scholarship and placed third for dramatic monologue, second in senior teen Broadway ballad, second in Broadway up-tempo and first place for comedy monologue. • Tyler and Claire also placed first as a duet in the category of overall senior duet. • The foursome also placed first as an ensemble in the category of group musical theater performance and performed "Magic Fingers" from Betty Blue Eyes during the competition's awards ceremony. "This our first time competing at MTC Triple Threat, and it was a weekend filled with wonderful experiences and opportunities for our actors," said Brian Marshall, director of Caryl Crane Youth Theatre. "Their hard work paid off, and it was a fitting end to our competition season." Caryl Crane represents a program of the Sandusky State Theatre. Upon reopening, which should occur later this year, Caryl Crane will perform at the downtown Sandusky venue. "This was Caryl Crane Youth Theatre's second competition season with the state theater, and we're so lucky to help provide these opportunities for young actors in our region. They worked so hard and represented our community well on the national stage," state theater executive director Chris Parthemore said.
