SMCC knocked out by Calvert

TIFFIN — St. Mary Central Catholic couldn't recapture its upset magic. A week after state-ranked Calvert lost to the Panthers, the Senecas eliminated SMCC in a D-IV sectional final on Thursday night, 11-1. Calvert put up six runs in the fifth inning to make the difference. SMCC notched nine hits but could only plate a run in the top of the first. Freshman Cayden Wikel doubled, and he came home on a single by junior brother Reid Wikel. Cayden Wikel, Braylon Harris, Austin Gill and Will Bruni each had a pair of hits for the Panthers (12-14). Calvert's Blake Coleman worked on the traffic on the mound, striking out eight and walking just one in six innings to avoid further damage. AJ Shoemaker delivered a run-scoring single to end the game via run-rule after six innings. Calvert advances to play St. Paul on Wednesday, May 22 at 2 p.m. in a D-IV district semifinal at Oak Harbor. SMCC 100 000 — 1 9 2Calvert 200 063 — 11 11 2 WP: Shoemaker. LP: C. Wikel
