Consider costs carefully

An advisory committee steering progress on Sandusky's planned city recreation center is mulling a membership fee structure. We implore those leading this process to think long on this and accept feedback from all sectors of the community before deciding to implement a paid membership structure. The city's rec center — a longstanding pipe dream for residents that's finally going to be a reality — is, in our view, meant to be many things. A fitness center, sure, but also a gathering spot for the community, and especially children. A place for younger folks to congregate, participate in fun activities, get a meal, and so on. It's meant to be something that's accessible to all people in our community of all income levels. It's not just another gym. Committee members must take that into account and make sure that their decisions aren't locking anyone out. It's the city rec center — that means everyone who lives here. Register photo/ERIN CALDWELL The beautiful aurora borealis that passed over much of the U.S. and Ohio this past weekend was truly a rare sight to behold. The writer of this editorial missed viewing the aurora in person — something he is kicking himself for — but joined in scores of others who viewed the many breathtaking photos of the phenomenon. What a strange coincidence that the Sandusky area was able to view two rare celestial phenomena, the aurora and the April 8 total solar eclipse, in such quick succession. No challenge too great As we approach graduation season, we were heartened to hear the story of one Alexander Mannor, ('Rising above adversity,' May 13, 2024 Sandusky Register.) The now-17-year-old had many struggles in his upbringing and schooling due to developmental disabilities, including autism and cognitive delay. Mannor Provided photo But despite all that, Mannor pressed on and found his stride in a non-traditional school setting in the form of Fremont's Buckeye Community School. He's going to be graduating this June after a successful effort to graduate from the school early. The young man wants to pursue a career in which he can "protect and serve" others — admirable indeed. Kudos to you, Alexander.
