A 'Crystal Moon' rising

HURON — A business paying homage to the moon offers a universal approach in making people feel better about themselves. The mother-daughter duo of Mardella and Monica Hamernik recently opened Crystal Moon Holistic Wellness Center in Huron. At 2012 Cleveland Road W., it's located in the same plaza as Knucklehead Saloon. Both Mardella and her daughter, Monica, graduated from EHOVE Career Center's esthetician school, which helped them learn all aspects of skin care, facial treatments and more. With their education, they now offer a wide range of services to help people heal. This would include facials; waxing; tinting and laminations for eyebrows and eyelashes; aromatherapy; sound healing; and relaxation massages. The two also specialize in reiki, an ancient Japanese practice that harnesses energy for healing purposes. They can also treat damaged skin from prolonged sun exposure along with working on one's wrinkles. "We treat the whole you," Mardella said. Mardella began working with therapy known as sound healing — which uses sounds, music, instruments and more — about 15 years ago, which first sparked her interest in healing people. "It helped me focus during a really bad time in my life, and I wanted to carry that over into here," said Mardella, a mother to five and grandmother to five. "I also have an autistic grandson. I want to eventually venture out and help families with autistic children or adults with autism." Monica became passionate about skin care due to growing up with acne. "It was really bad, and I got into aesthetics to help myself," Monica said. "But then I realized I also wanted to help others, and my mom and me thought it would be best to start a mother-daughter business." With Mother's Day this weekend, both reflected on operating a business together. "It was something we always talked about," Monica said. "We always thought it would be nice." Added Mardella: "We can carry on with each other. She has my back, and I know she has mine. Clients can see that we have a trust with one another and, in turn, can trust us with the quality care we will provide them." Beyond everything else, all of their services circle back to bringing out the beauty in everyone. "Society, in general, has a very big view on how people should look. I struggled with it a lot," Monica said. "It shouldn't be how people see you. It should be about how you see yourself, and people are beautiful and confident." Mardella echoed Monica's sentiments. "We want to raise people's confidence in themselves. We see beautiful people every time they walk into the door. We want people to see that same thing, too, when they leave."
