SOFTBALL: Sailors stun Tigers; Fliers share Lake crown

VERMILION — Vermilion's softball team picked up the best win of its season on Friday night, knocking off Huron, 4-2. "It's the best win of my high school career," Vermilion coach Tony Larizza said via phone afterward. The Sailors' victory prevented the Tigers from winning the SBC Bay Division outright. They'll have to settle for a co-title if Margaretta (7-2 Bay) beats Edison on May 11. Vermilion, which had lost 8-7 in its first meeting with Huron, struck right away in the bottom of the first. Sarah Beck doubled with one out, and Cora Frederick singled her home. The Sailors (8-11, 5-5) pushed the lead to 3-0 in the fifth when Allison Traut walked, Jeighla Peak tripled and Beck doubled. Beck, a junior, was the only player on either team to have multiple hits. "(Beck) is just now hitting her hot streak," Larizza said. "She also made a catch on her knees and another over her head." Huron (15-6, 8-2) pulled two back in the sixth on an RBI double from Layla Weltle and a run-scoring error. Vermilion senior pitcher Gracie Porter provided the final margin with a single in the bottom of the sixth to score Abby Gawry (reached on error). Porter ended the game by inducing a popout and striking out back to back hitters. "Pitching was great, and our defense was the best it's been all season," Larizza said. "... Gracie has been our workhorse the last three years, and I finally feel she's getting some recognition she deserves." Vermilion will take big-time momentum into its next game, a home sectional semifinal against Tiffin Columbian on Tuesday. The Tornadoes beat the Sailors 6-3 back in their season opener. That makes Clyde co-SBC Lake Division champions with the Truckers. Maddie Dukeshire threw a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts and had two hits of her own. Karissa Smith led Clyde with three hits, including a double and triple. The Fliers end the league season with an 8-2 record and are now 16-6 overall. Bellevue 14, Sandusky 4 SANDUSKY — The Lady Red (8-12, 5-5) scored in six separate innings to defeat the Blue Streaks (6-14, 2-8). Kyra Henney homered and scored five runs. Ariana Holzhauer had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in four runs. Melody Sommers also drove in four runs. For Sandusky, Maijon Wiley went 3-for-4 with a double.
