PREP ROUNDUP: Pirates edge Lady Red in sectional preview

BELLEVUE — Perkins' softball team will play Bellevue again in six days when the Lady Red visit the Pirates for a sectional semifinal. The Pirates picked up a tone-setting win Wednesday night, going to Bellevue and bringing home a 5-4 victory. "It was nice to beat them," Perkins coach Scott Dickman said. "It really was. The girls did a good job. There was a lot of effort tonight. That's what we need this time of year." Perkins mixed it up in the circle, starting junior Caden McClellan, and she threw a complete game. She worked out of multiple jams, stranding nine runners on base. "Caden pitched great," Dickman said. "I was very happy with her. Some big spots, they had runners in scoring position and she got outs." Tayler Hawkins led Perkins (8-9, 6-3 SBC Lake) at the plate with three hits, including a double and triple. Aubrey Ransom added two hits and two RBI. Perkins will go to Elyria Catholic on Thursday, Norwalk on Friday and then take on Edison on Saturday. Bellevue (7-12, 4-5) will visit Campbell Street for postseason softball next Tuesday. "As well as we know each other, I don't think it's a big deal," Dickman said of playing so soon before the tourney game. "It is what it is." Howey and Jeffrey each drove in four runs. The Fliers kept themselves in contention for a piece of the SBC Lake title.
