Toledo's Mitchell taken by Eagles in first round

DETROIT — The Philadelphia Eagles selected Toledo cornerback Quinyon Mitchell with the No. 22 pick in the NFL draft on Thursday night. Mitchell ran a 4.33-second 40-yard dash at the combine. The Eagles took a cornerback in the first round for the first time since 2002. The Eagles believe they have a shutdown cornerback who projects as an impact player with fellow cornerback Darius Slay in defensive coordinator Vic Fangio's scheme. "I feel like right now, I'm with the right fit, I'm with the right organization with the right players, the right city," Mitchell said. Mitchell wasn't ready to declare himself a starter, saying he's "got some vets in front of me that I can really learn from." He was the first University of Toledo player chosen in the first round of the NFL Draft in 31 years. The only other Rockets player that was a first-round pick was defensive lineman Dan Williams (No. 11 by Denver in 1993). In 2023, Mitchell was named second-team All-America by the Associated Press, FWAA, Sporting News and AFCA. He made Walter Camp second-team All-America in 2022, which makes him the only Rocket ever to be named to all five major All-America teams in his career. He is Toledo's second player ever to be named to a major All-America team in multiple years, the other being defensive lineman Mel Long, Sr. in 1970-71. Over his Toledo career, the Willston, Fla. native totaled 122 tackles with 6.5 TFLs, defended 52 passes, came up with six interceptions and added a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He also scored on two pick-sixes in the 2022 season, two of his four interceptions in a 52-32 victory at Northern Illinois in 2022. In an interview with ESPN's Kaylee Hartung following his selection, Mitchell thanked the University of Toledo for helping him reach his goals. "They gave me a lot of loyalty, a lot of love," said Mitchell. "Coming out of high school, I had some grade issues and they just stuck with me throughout the whole process. I just give my thanks to them and give my thanks to God."The pick was only the second big Eagles move of the night after they kept wide receiver A.J. Brown in the fold with a contract extension. The Eagles and Brown agreed to a three-year extension that includes $84 million in guaranteed money, according to a person familiar with the situation. The person spoke Thursday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the financial terms were not announced. Brown is set to become the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL at $32 million a season and he could earn as much as $96 million over the life of the extension.
