Nursing students present posters

SANDUSKY — Firelands Regional Medical Center School of Nursing junior registered nursing students collaborated on a project to explore and disseminate current evidence-based nursing practices. Throughout the medical-surgical nursing course, small groups of students worked together to complete phases of the assignment that ultimately culminated in offering an evidence-based poster session for the nursing professionals at Firelands Health on Thursday. Poster topics included: • The adherence to tuberculosis treatment • The promotion of influenza vaccinations for mothers and children • How aromatherapy can reduce pain, nausea and anxiety • The promotion of self-efficacy with diabetes management • Fall prevention • Improving inpatient mobility with gaming • How to incorporate virtual reality during colonoscopies • How chewing gum, post-op(eration) can promote patient outcomes • The mindfulness intervention for patients with cancer • The best practice with chest tube dressings • How optical illusions and 3D videos can reduce pain with IV insertion • Nursing teams looking at urinary catheter insertion Attendees of the poster session earned contact hours toward their annual continuing education requirements for the maintenance of a registered nursing license in Ohio. While all students received several comments on a job well done, a Best Poster Award was voted on by the 75-plus attendees for criteria associated with relevance to nursing practice and the best-executed poster/presentation. The winners were Nadia Drivas, Katelyn Morgan and Lynnette Swinehart, three students from our LPN-to-RN program, for their poster related to aromatherapy uses in health care.
