Leisure Park II's new look

PERKINS TWP. — Children and their families can soon expect a new play space at a popular park in Perkins Township. Earlier this week, crews ripped out an old playground and other unsafe structures found at Leisure Park II on Birchwood Avenue not far from Furry Elementary. Brittany Henley, the township's public service coordinator, provided some context so others can understand what's happening: • The necessity: "The park system has always been important to the township trustees by providing safe play equipment. The playground equipment was outdated at Leisure Park II, and the trustees approved the upgrades." • The amenities: "This park equipment is for the younger kids ages 2-5. There will be a new three-bay swing installed and a pirate ship for kids to slide and climb on. We are installing a picnic shelter with tables for families to enjoy." • The importance: "Leisure Park II is a neighborhood park that a lot of families utilize. The trustees take pride make the health and safety of our children a priority. When doing upgrades to a park, the township aims to give all children a safe place to play." • The timeline: "We are hoping to have this park completed by the time school is out for the summer." • The expense: The project's cost totaled about $71,600. Perkins previously received a state grant totaling $14,000, which "will help offset the costs of this project. The rest of the project will be funded from the general fund," supported by local tax dollars.
