PREP ROUNDUP: Vermilion's Kearns delivers walk-off to beat Edison

VERMILION — Vermilion baseball returned to the SBC Bay Division this spring, and on Wednesday night, the Sailors delivered quite the opening salvo. Riley Kearns knocked a single to left to bring home Codey Schwarck with the walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh inning of a 4-3 win over back-to-back league champion Edison. Vermilion had jumped out ahead 2-0 in the first inning, then fell behind 3-2 before getting a run each in the sixth and the seventh. Kearns and Evan Kuhns each had two hits for the Sailors. Kearns threw six innings for Vermilion with five strikeouts before Schwarck struck out the side in the seventh to set up the dramatic finish. Colt Flores threw a complete-game four-hitter for the Fliers. The freshman struck out eight. Clyde improved to 6-3 on the season, including 2-1 in the SBC Lake Division. Zwiesler allowed five hits and the one run while striking out three and not walking a batter. At the plate, Logan Lesch and Kash Koch were each 2-for-3. Lesch stole three bases and scored three runs.
