WRESTLING: Edison, Perkins each get 6 sectional champs

PLYMOUTH — Area wrestlers won 10 of the 14 weight classes as Monroeville won the Division III sectional championship team title at Plymouth. The Eagles had three champions and seven finalists en route to totaling 215.5 points, which finished ahead of Edison (199.5), which had six champions and eight finalists. Winning titles for Monroeville were Owen Patchen (106 pounds), Ashton Homan (138) and Landen Roeder (144). Finishing second: Anderson Evans (150), Brencyn Evans (165), Benjamin Seitz (175) and Brycen Dunlap (285). For Edison, champions included Xander Gfell-King (113), Abe Hermes (126) Marcus Medina (157), Kohen Horvath (165), Luke James (175) and Cy Finnen (190). Earning second for the Chargers were Mason Hermes (106) and Quentin Cox (120). In a matchup of the No. 7-ranked Patchen and No. 10-ranked Hermes (borofanohio.net), the Monroeville freshman scored a 4-2 decision in the finals. The No. 8-ranked Homan, a defending state champion, pinned three opponents in less than two minutes each, including Western Reserve's Landen Barnhart in 1:03 in the finals. Also for the Eagles, the No. 9-ranked Roeder pinned three opponents, including Andy Case of Bucyrus in 3:28 in the final. Gfell-King had three pins for the Chargers, capped by a 2:51 pin over South Central's Diton Farnsworth in the 113 final. Abe Hermes, one of three past area state champions competing in Plymouth, opened with a technical fall win, followed by an 8-1 decision over Monroeville's Colt Clark. He then scored a 5-2 decision in the finals over No. 15-ranked Nicholas Parks from Seneca East. The No. 3-ranked Medina returned from an injury to register a pair of pins and a 7-0 decision in the finals over St. Paul freshman Rafael Gross. Horvarth, ranked No. 1 at 165, had a pair of pins and a 10-2 major decision over Monroeville's No. 6-ranked Brencyn Evans in the final. James is also ranked No. 1 at 175, and his three pins totaled just 1:55 in total time to win the weight class. At 190, in another big area match of the Nos. 19 and 20-ranked wrestlers in the state, Edison's Cy Finnen edged St. Paul's Tristan Nickoli in a 4-3 decision. St. Paul senior Casper Caizzo, the No. 3-ranked wrestler at 132, another former state champion, pinned Plymouth's Ben Trimmer in 59 seconds in the finals. The top four in each weight class will wrestle next week at the Rossford district. The top four there will advance to the OHSAA state championships, set for March 8-10 in Columbus. Finishing atop the podium for the Pirates were: Sawyer Smith (113), Wyatt Nemitz (126), Collin Calderon (138), Braxden Martin (150), Kaiyon McKinney (165) and Adam West (215). Perkins won the team championship with 258 points. Clear Fork (204) was second and Norwalk (128) finished third. Vermilion was fourth with 114 points. Vermilion had two champions: Aiden Kyser (144) and Cohen Mooney (190). Sandusky's Mason Henley scored a 5-4 decision over Perkins' Alex Zoellner to win the 157-pound title. Henley, who has battled injuries this season, is 10-0. Henley had a bye and two pins to reach the finals. Nemitz improved to 37-4 with a bye, a pin, a major decision and a tech fall. Martin had a bye, two pins and a decision to improve to 17-1. McKinney, the top-ranked wrestler in D-II at 165, is 29-3 after a bye, tech fall, pin and major decision. Vermilion's Mooney (29-10) had three pins before edging Perkins' Haiden Bollini 10-8 in the 190 final. West (32-8) had a bye and three pins to dominate at 215.
