PREP ROUNDUP: Perkins holds off TC, set for rematch

TIFFIN — Perkins and Tiffin Columbian will face off in four days in a D-II sectional semifinal, making Friday night's regular season finale between the Pirates and Tornadoes an interesting test case. In the end when Perkins needed a jolt, Weston Sturzinger drilled two 3-pointers to boost the Pirates to a 49-44 SBC Lake win. The teams will meet at Perkins on Tuesday. Sturzinger paced the Pirates (15-7, 6-4 SBC Lake) with 13 points, while Brennan Koelsch added 11 and Joey Diederich ended with nine. Brady Gooding had 14 points, followed by Zach Shawberry with 13 and Isaac Garcia with 12. "We're not going to deviate too much from our plan, but we will switch some things up because it's the tournament," Pirates coach Eric Kochendoerfer said. "But at the end of the day our bread and butter is sitting down playing good quality defense, check out and go. "We'll have to do some things differently Tuesday based on some of the new defenses we saw tonight, but glad we saw them for the first time tonight and not Tuesday, but it gives up an opportunity to study some film and make sure we're ready." The Whippets (20-2) — ranked No. 2 in the poll — outscored the No. 9-ranked Flashes by 12 in a decisive second quarter. Willard got a game-high 36 points from standout Max Dawson, while Cam Robinson finished with 17 points. Robinson surpassed the 1,000-point mark in the defeat, making him the 13th player in program history to reach the feat. "I started our 4 seniors: Gabe howell, Blake Schaub, Isaac Clingman and Kole Ackerman who did a great job and have meant a lot to the program," Monroeville coach Paul Roeder said. Cole Perry, a sophomore, added 10 points off the bench. Monroeville finished the regular season 7-15 (5-9 FC), while Mapleton fell to 15-7 (9-5).
