School notes: Port Clinton, Norwalk Catholic, St. Mary, Oak Harbor

MARGARETTA • Margaretta Elementary students participated in a Real Money, Real World program. The Real Money, Real World program helped fifth-grade students with financial literacy and provided the opportunity to make lifestyle and budget decisions. Volunteers and the OSU extension office partnered with Margaretta Elementary to put on the program. SANDUSKY CENTRAL CATHOLIC • St. Mary's Mock Trial team ended their season at district level. Two students from the team were awarded for their work on the team. At the competition, Brian Serna won outstanding witness, and Kealy Kolar won outstanding attorney. NORWALK CENTRAL CATHOLIC • St. Paul High School competed in the statewide Mock Trial Competition. On Jan. 26, St. Paul competed at the Huron County Courthouse against Edison, Sandusky Central Catholic and Keystone. Mock trial is a competition in which teams competed as prosecution and defense groups in hypothetical cases. Local legal professionals judge the team's ability to prove facts of the case. Students play the roles of attorneys and witnesses and awards are given to those excelling in those roles. Geralyn Mutchler, Abby Juby and Kaley Clark all received Best Witness Awards. The team also advanced to the regional competition. On Feb. 16, St. Paul will go against other Northwest Ohio schools. PORT CLINTON • Port Clinton Middle School students participated in a spelling bee. On Feb 1, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students with the top scores in their language arts classes participated in the competition. First-, second- and third-place spelling bee winners include Shantha Weit, Miles Taylor and Parker Howard. The top three spellers from the middle school bee will compete in The Blade Regional Championship Spelling Bee. • Port Clinton High School hosted VEX Robotics competition on Jan. 29. Port Clinton High School's robotics team, the Roboskins, is made up of team members Quinton Cook, Davis Toris, Alex Hill, Mason Short, Austin Leis, Ethan Leis, Xavier Good, Liam Coppeler, Abram Sandvick and Dean Coppeler. These students are under the direction of the school's STEM teacher, Bobby Good. About 100 students from Norwalk, Norwalk St. Paul, Margaretta, Monroeville, Buckeye Central, Edison and New London attended the competition. Port Clinton is part of the Sandusky Bay Area VEX Robotics Competition which is coordinated by Nathan Whaley from Norwalk High School. Teams are responsible for building, programming, developing and strategizing with teammates and their robot in preparation for the competition.
