PREP ROUNDUP: New London beats Monroeville in OT; PC, Danbury boys get wins

NEW LONDON — The quest for its first league championship in 22 years had a potential scare on Friday for the New London girls basketball team. The Firelands Conference-leading Wildcats avoided an upset loss at home after rallying in the closing seconds of regulation against Monroeville in a 50-47 overtime win. Monroeville led 40-37 in the final 90 seconds. After the Wildcats tied the game at 41, the Eagles' Gabi Cullen made two free throws with 16.4 seconds left for a 43-41 lead. But New London's leading scorer, Emilee Rowland, was fouled with 5.8 seconds left. She made both free throws, which sent the game into overtime. In OT, the Wildcats (10-4, 9-0) were able to score the first four points to take control, and held off the Eagles (6-5, 3-5). Rowland finished with a game-high 21 points for New London, while Gracie Thomas added 12 points and Valery Henry scored 10. For Monroeville, Grace Stieber made three 3s and scored 12 points, followed by Ava Kruger with 10 points and Cullen with nine. New London is off until Jan. 18 when it visits Mapleton, while Monroeville travels to Mapleton to face the Mounties on Saturday. Old Fort 65, SMCC 42 OLD FORT — The host Stockaders steadily pulled away from the Panthers in an SBC River Division matchup. The Panthers (4-8, 4-6) got 12 points from Braylon Harris and eight from Garrett Jackson. Old Fort (10-2, 9-1) made eight 3-pointers in the victory and was led by Blake Bender with 15 points. Hermes kept his roll going by making it all the way to the final in the high-powered tourney at 126 pounds. He will face Ryan Kennedy of Spire Academy in the championship match on Saturday. He is one of four local wrestlers who will compete in a championship match at the 58-school event. It'll be an all-SBC final at 165 pounds between Perkins' Kaiyon McKinney and Edison's Kohen Horvath. McKinney had four pins on Saturday before advancing to the final with a 4-3 decision over Monroeville's Brencyn Evans. Horvath had a bye, followed by two pins, followed by decision victories of 6-2 and 5-1. Edison also has a finalist at 175 pounds, where Luke James will wrestle Ayersville's Kasen Wellman. James had a bye, a pin, two technical falls and a 3-1 decision to reach the championship match. Perkins junior Haiden Bollini reached the 190-pound semifinal with a pair of pins before falling to Medina Buckeye senior Eddie Neitenbach, ranked No. 1 in the state in D-II. After the first day of wrestling, Edison is sixth in the team scoring with 94 points. Perkins is seventh with 92. Perrysburg (178.5) and Medina Buckeye (145.0) are atop the leaderboard. DIVINGSBC diving champions crowned CASTALIA — Four Sandusky Bay Conference diving championships were won Thursday at Margaretta's pool. Perkins swept the Lake Division. Tre Leber repeated as boys champion with a 313.00, setting his 11-dive personal best by 61 points. Paige Schnittker was girls champ with a 294.45. Both Bay Division winners were from Huron. Hayden Holmes topped the boys competition at 275.85, and Addielynn Hoffman scored a 225.40 in the girls competition.
