But an 18-year-old woman running for the Ohio House District 2 state senate seat jumped off her campaign this week in the Register, making her clear differences with the incumbent known upfront. Paloma De La Fuente, a Perrysburg resident, graduated from high school in Perrysburg. She took a gap semester and will begin school in the spring at the University of Toledo, majoring in legal and paralegal studies. She plans to attend law school. But, for now, she's the candidate who wants to run against incumbent Theresa Gavarone in the fall. "This is my job now," De La Fuente told Register reporter Tom Jackson. We cannot think of anything better for a fresh perspective than for young people being involved in our electoral process from a young age. She's pro-reproductive rights, pro-environment, the economy and labor and pro-education, she said. Veto was right DeWine Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has received both praise and criticism for his decision to veto House Bill 68, legislation that would have prohibited transgender youth from accessing gender-affirming care. The veto also prevents the state from stopping middle and high school trans students from participating in athletics with cisgender peers. We offer the governor praise. Lawmakers who support this legislation are not respecting families or their rights to make their own health care decisions. Instead, they are using this issue for political gain, callously disregarding everything else. This might be a time in his political life during which DeWine is more free from the demands of many Republicans that he support this type of agenda. The governor won't be running for another term, so he does not have to worry about attacks from the right. If that's the case, then so be it. DeWine was correct to veto this bill. Stop us if you've heard this Jeff Foxworthy famouspeople.com We're reminded of Jeff Foxworthy's comedy routine when we think about how the Ohio attorney general's treats public records. "You know you're talking to somebody from the attorney general's office when you hear that familiar evasiveness in their voice," the line goes. Recently, an attorney with the "public records unit" of the office told the Register an email sent to a state investigator was not public record because the agent did not do anything with the email after receiving it. The email contained information about two alleged victims of a suspected serial rapist. We're not sure what's worse: that the agent did not do anything with the information, or that the office has the audacity to claim a record — an actual record — is not a record because they say isn't. What we know for sure is that when a bureaucracy can be so arrogant it's time for reform.
