Babysitter takes plea

FREMONT — A Fremont woman entered an Alford plea to a charge of involuntary manslaughter and other charges recently. Kori A. Seavers, 38, of the 600 block of Sixth St., entered the plea on Friday. An Alford plea allows a person to maintain their innocence while admitting that the state probably has enough evidence for a conviction. Seavers was originally indicted in June with one count each of murder, involuntary manslaughter, felonious assault and child endangering, all of which are felonies. She took an Alford plea on the felonious assault and child endangering charges as well. Court records are unclear as to the status of the murder charge. Seavers allegedly caused the death of an individual only identified by their initials in a Sandusky County indictment. Police were called to Seavers' home on Sept. 20, 2022 for a report of an unresponsive one-year-old. Fremont police Sgt. Vincent Borcado started CPR on the child while another officer spoke to Seavers who was babysitting the child, according to a police report. Seavers reportedly told officers she left the boy unattended for two minutes while she prepared a bottle. When she returned, she changed his diaper and he was crying, which she reported is normal. When she sat the boy upright after changing the diaper, he fell forward with his face on the floor, the report states. Seavers reportedly claimed the boy was prone to doing that when he has a tantrum. Seavers said she then realized the boy was not breathing, scooped him up, ran upstairs and called 911. The boy was taken to ProMedica Memorial Hospital before being transferred to a Toledo hospital specializing in treating children. He died there on Sept. 24, 2022. The state has not disclosed its theory of what happened. Fremont police Chief Derek Wensinger deferred to the Huron County prosecutor, who handled the case as special prosecutor. Multiple messages left with the prosecutor's office have gone unanswered. Court records do not indicate if a sentencing date has been set.
