Sandusky Eagles soaring high

SANDUSKY — By flocking together for important causes, these days, a large group of community members are flying high. This past year, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 444, headquartered on King Street in Sandusky, underwent a major shakeup to its leadership team. And much positive change followed. "We now have a group together that is very like-minded," Sandusky Eagles president Dianne Trout said. "Our job here is to serve the community, and we are all focused on that. Everyone that is with me has the club's best interest at heart and is driven by the community that we live in." The Eagles host several functions, especially during the holidays, for those in need. For instance, on Wednesday, members offered a community Thanksgiving dinner for anyone seeking one. Additionally, it's a drop-off site for Victory Kitchen's Shoebox Christmas initiative, which provides presents for area children. Many members donate gifts toward this effort. "Our mission is built on people helping people," said Robert Fisher Jr., a trustee-chairman of the Sandusky Eagles. And the abundance of in-house events for members — which would include billiards leagues, raffles and drawings linked to major sporting contests, karaoke and more — often come attached with a charitable component. "If you want to do something good for the community but also have a good time doing it, this is one of the best places for that," said Trout, who, last year, became the Sandusky Eagles' first woman president since its founding in 1930. About 400 people collectively serve as Sandusky Eagles members and/or in its auxiliary club. The organization always welcomes more members. "We are all like family here," said Trout, noting she's carrying on a legacy started by her grandparents, Avery and Kathryn Trout, and followed up with her father, James, who all served as officers in leadership roles. "I'm proud of our membership and what we do here and want to see it continue," Trout said.
