Unthinkable tragedy

We must join in with local school officials in expressing shock and sadness at Tuesday morning's fatal bus crash involving students in southern Ohio. A charter bus that was carrying students from the Tuscarawas Valley School District was part of a multivehicle collision that included two semi-trucks. Six people were killed: three students and three adults. Two of those adults were parents of students, and the third was a teacher. Those who died were identified as John W. Mosely, 18, Mineral City; Jeffery D. Worrell, 18, Bolivar; Katelyn N. Owens, 15, Mineral City; Dave Kennat, 56, Naverre; Kristy Gaynor, 39, Zoar; and Shannon Wigfield, 45, Bolivar. The circumstances of how the crash occurred still aren't clear, but we hope state and national officials investigating the incident learn more about what happened, determine if criminal charges are warranted and figure out if anything can be done to prevent future tragedies. We sure do appreciate this program and its success. Crews recently installed eight distinct artwork pieces across the city's northern edge. The sculptures are at West Shoreline Drive to the intersection at West Adams Street, Central Avenue and Decatur Street; at Columbus Avenue by the Sandusky Library; at West Park off Columbus Avenue and West Monroe Street; at East Park off Columbus Avenue and East Monroe Street; at Huron Avenue at East Monroe Street to East Adams Street, Hancock Street and Huron Avenue, and finally at Huron Avenue and Wayne Street. Register photo/ANDY OURIEL We're all excited for the return of Sandusky's Holiday Lighting Ceremony, which returns at 6 p.m. in the city's downtown on Nov. 24, one week from today. Santa will make a grand return to the Cookie House in Washington Park, and people will enjoy refreshments and music in the leadup to the park's illumination. The holiday lights in the city are always a sight to behold and it always seems like the season passes quickly, and they're gone in a blink — so we'll be enjoying them for sure for the time they're here.
