School notes: Sandusky, Perkins, Edison, Port Clinton, Huron, EHOVE and Vermilion

SANDUSKY/PERKINS • Sandusky Schools ran a Back-To-School survey open to its district's families. Those who responded were entered into a giveaway contest. The Walk, Keefe, Hayfield, Schoder and Johnson families were randomly selected as contest winners. Sandusky's superintendent, Daniel Rambler, dropped off prizes to the winning families. Prizes included Rambler's favorite pizza from Pizza House East. • Sandusky and Perkins High Schools competed in the Goodwill Drive to Victory challenge. The schools collected gently used clothes, household items, textbooks and other donation ideas. At the end of the competition, whichever school's donation weighed more won a $500 scholarship. The contest started on Monday, Oct. 9, and went on until the end of the week. Donation drop-off hours were every day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Donations will be used to support local Goodwill Industries in Erie, Huron, Ottawa and Sandusky Counties. Friends, family and all community members within the district participated in the event. Danbury and St. Mary Central Catholic Schools participated in the same drive earlier this month. Danbury was the winner of their contest. EDISON • An Edison High School student was recently recognized with a national award. Samuel McClester earned academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Programs. The academic honors are for students from rural or small-town areas, or those who identify as African American/Black, Indigenous/Native, and/or Latino/Hispanic American students. These programs showcase students' academic performance in high school to colleges and scholarship recruiters. McClester falls under the rural area category of recognized students. Students apply for awards during their sophomore or junior years to be recognized while preparing for their future. Eligible students must also have a Grade Point Average of 3.5 or higher, and a PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 10 assessment score within the top 10% of takers in each state for each award program, or score a 3 or higher on 2 or more AP Exams in 9th or 10th grade. "I am honored to receive the 2023 CollegeBoard's National Recognition Program Award," McClester said. "I would like to thank the amazing teachers here at Edison High School who have guided and helped me through my academic career. Without the help of my family and the community around me, I would not be where I am today." McClester is an active member of his high school. He has played soccer and tennis, and is a member of Firelands Challenge, National Honor Society and Teen Leadership Corps. He plans to continue his education by pursuing a degree in environmental engineering. • Edison Elementary recently received a book vending machine. Students can buy books with tokens they earn from their reading progress and good behavior. • Edison's Teen Leadership Corps. is celebrating Socktober. The Teen Leadership Corps. is an organization empowering teens to be leaders through character and service-based curriculum. The students took a day off of school to collect socks from the Norwalk Walmart. The collected socks will be donated to the Salvation Army, Miriam House and Hannah's Socks. PORT CLINTON • Port Clinton's National Honor Society collected trash as part of their semi-annual Adopt a Road campaign. The school's National Honor Society collected trash along Gill Road on Oct. 8. Students participating in the society's campaign are: Joseph Apple, Piper Capodice, Corrine Baker, Sam Roberts, Brooklin Starkey, Lydia Roberts, Max Lucas, Peyton Shimming, Alexa K, Amelia Honeycutt, Dre Wallace, Summer Butler, Camiah Baker, Emily Boykin, Quin Febinger, Jermy Cook, Jessica Wadel, Olivia Spencer, Eddie Fick, Will Hartlaub, Bryce James, Landon Witte, Chase Marlatt, Carson Miller, Kaylie Simpson, Arleigh Dackerman, Cameron Schmitt, Madison Wiechmann, Giavanna Astley and Gladys Wiechmann. Kathy Miller is the PCHS National Honor Society Advisor. HURON • Huron High School will participate in the Goodwill Drive to Victory. Starting Oct. 16 to Oct. 19, students and community members of Huron can drop off gently used items to the Goodwill truck located at the high school. Huron will be competing against Edison to collect the heavier donation truck. If Huron wins, proceeds will go towards the school's Student Council. • Huron High School Cheerleaders recently read to younger students. The high school's senior cheerleaders went to Woodlands Elementary School to read to students there. EHOVE Career Center • EHOVE students recently utilized virtual reality for learning. EHOVE's Criminal Justice students defused a bomb using virtual reality. This exercise taught the students critical thinking and strengthened team-building skills. VERMILION • On Oct. 9, The Friends of Harbour Town donated a 48-star U.S. flag to Vermilion School at its school board meeting. The flag was last flown over Vermilion High School, formally South Street High School at the time, on the day of Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941. The morning after the attack, Willis Gebhardt, a past teacher and later principal of the school, took the flag down and put a new one up out of respect for those involved in the attack. Gebhardt later donated the flag to the Friends of Harbour Town, Inc. Friends of Harbour Town is a volunteer nonprofit organization that works to maintain, restore and support the historic area. The organization is shutting down and donating the flag back to the high school. The organization will also be making a donation to offset the expenses of the Greenfield Village fifth-grade field trip.
