School notes: Sandusky, Perkins, Clyde-Green Springs, Vermilion, Edison, Port Clinton

SANDUSKY • Sandusky High School's Class of 1973 gathered for its 50th class reunion. The event happened on Sept. 9 at the Sandusky Yacht Club. Former students also celebrated at Daly's Pub the day prior. More than 150 alumni were in attendance for the two days. PERKINS • Alaina Speer, a Perkins High School senior, placed sixth in a VFW Auxiliary art contest. She entered the 3-Dimensional Patriotic Art Contest. Her art was judged locally, across the state and nationally. This is the first time a local student has competed at the national level. The 3-Dimensional Patriotic Art Contest is open to grades 9-12. Eligible students attend public, private or parochial high school or home study programs within the U.S., territories and possessions or dependents of the military or civilian personnel in overseas schools. Contestants submitted pieces made from various materials. Examples include paper, pottery, clay, metal, and fabric. Contestants submitted an explanation and artist statement along with their art piece. CLYDE-GREEN SPRINGS • McPherson Middle School announced its September Students of the Month. — Brandon Bollenbacher and Brynn Blackburn were awarded as the 6th Grade Students of the Month. — Julia Norris and Ethan Skeels were named September's 7th-grade Students of the Month. — 8th Grade Students of the Month were Parker Ruffing and Lawson Davlin. The middle school also recognized two exploratory students and two club members for September. — Olivia Mosier and Baylor Lewis were honored as Exploratory Students of the Month. Olivia Zoller from the Baking Club and Maddy Ahlgrim from the Kindness Club were named Club Members of the Month. The middle school honors athletes each week. Through September, Carson Gillmor, an eighth-grade football player, Analaeya Herrera, a seventh-grade volleyball player, Chris Bulger, an eighth-grade cross country runner, Ella Piasecki, a seventh-grade cross country runner and Kember Nelson, an eighth-grade volleyball player, were all recognized by the school. MAPLETON • EHOVE Career Center, South Central, St. Paul and Sandusky Middle School all showed their love and support for an Ohio school district mourning the loss of a student. St. Paul, EHOVE's health and human services students and Sandusky Middle School students dressed in red, white and blue in support of Breanne McKean who tragically lost her life. McKean was a Mapeton senior who had collapsed on the school's football field and later died at the hospital during pregame homecoming festivities on Sept. 29. VERMILION • Vermilion High School named Reagan Massey the Lions Club Student of the Month for September. Massey's involvement in extracurricular activities and academics earned him the award. Massey is a current senior at Vermilion High School and ranks 3rd in his class with a 4.432 GPA. In addition to student of the month, Massey has also been awarded Student of the Year and earned letters in academics, Academic Challenge and three sports throughout his school career. Massey also represents students for the Vermilion Local School Board of Education. Massey plans to continue his education after high school and pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. EDISON • Edison students celebrated Do Something Nice Day on Oct. 5. Do Something Nice Day is a national holiday for random acts of kindness towards friends, family and strangers. The Sources of Strength Peer Leaders passed out doughnuts with the help of Dunkin' Donuts and Coles Energy. • Edison High School will host its Marching Band Review on Oct 14. Beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday at Edison High School, high school bands will come together for this annual event. In attendance this year will be: Toledo St. Francis De Sales High School, Monroeville High School, Buckeye Central High School, Western Reserve High School, Norwalk High School, and Edison High School combined with the Edison Middle School bands, Edison Alumni band and mini majorettes. Tickets are $7, and student and senior citizen tickets are $6. They will be sold at the gate starting at 5 p.m. The show will open with a performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" by all bands combined. Funds raised by the event will go towards instrument and music purchases for the Edison Music Department. PORT CLINTON • Port Clinton High School named Nora Bodie and Eddie Fick its Senior Spotlights for September. Nora Brodie is an involved student in Future Professionals in Medicine, Officer of International Club and Secretary of the Port Clinton High School Leadership Council. She is also a member of the National Honors Society and the Envirothon Team. She has acted as a student liaison for the Board of Education and represented students to the District Leadership Team. Brodie is active on the school's volleyball team, where she has acted as captain and set two school records for serving and hitting. She has also been a district qualifier and member of the SBC Championship Girls Swimming and Diving teams. Brodie's peers elected her to the 2023 homecoming court. Brodie plans to continue her education by pursuing a degree in biology. Fick is also a member of the National Honor Society, 2023 Homecoming Court, Leadership Council, representative to the District Leadership Team and liaison for the Board of Education. He is a Freshmen Mentor and captain of the boys soccer and tennis teams. Fick plans to attend The Ohio State University to pursue a degree in Sports Nutrition.
