CROSS COUNTRY: Chargers win night race; Towns, Huron 3rd at Tiffin Carnival

ATTICA — Edison's girls cross country team shone brightly under the lights at Seneca East's Stars, Stripes and Lights meet on Saturday night. The Chargers placed first in the D-III girls race — that was the last event of the night, getting started at 11:10 p.m. on the lit course that finished up inside the Tigers' football stadium. Grace Anderson led Edison with a third-place finish in 19:20. The Chargers' Maylie Weilnau came in ninth at 20:26. Lily Risner was 13th (21:21), followed by Ava Gardner in 30th (22:11) and Alli Corfman in 32nd (22:13). Edison's 73 team points were ahead of the hosts Seneca East, who were runners-up at 84. The D-III girls race was won by New London standout senior Reese Landis, who crossed the finish line 73 seconds before second-place Lily Schiefer of Seneca East. St. Mary Central Catholic put two runners in the top-20: Alizabith Walton (11th, 21:06) and Ava Pluto (19th, 21:42). Edison's boys were fourth in the D-III boys competition. Those Chargers were led by Kellen McDonnell, who placed sixth in 16:30. Jackson Michaelis was 15th in 17:01. Put-In-Bay's Richard Scarpelli was 84th (19:30) in the D-III race, and SMCC's Charlie Kaftan led the Panthers by coming in 91st (19:35). Perkins' girls team came in sixth out of 17 scoring teams in the Division II girls race. Ellie Bodle was the fastest Pirates runner, placing sixth in 20:16. Alex Merriman was 26th in 21:41, and Lillie Price, a freshman, ran 22:08 to come in 33rd. In the D-II boys race under the lights, Perkins' Keegan Dulaney was the best local finisher, coming in 19th in 17:39. His teammate, Blake Witter, placed 26th in 17:50. The Pirates placed 10th as a team out of 21 scoring teams. Towns, Huron 3rd at Tiffin Carnival TIFFIN — Huron senior Jadyn Towns dropped more than a minute off her time from last year to secure a third-place finish at Saturday's Tiffin Carnival. Towns' 19:03 paced the Tigers to third place as a team in the D-III varsity race at Hedges Boyer Park, the top local placement for area individuals and teams at the big meet. The younger Towns, freshman Rylie, came in fifth individually in 19:31. Huron put two other runners in the top-30: Samantha Lesnak (26th, 21:13) and Claire Putman (30th, 21:28). Sasha Fry rounded out the Tigers' scoring quintet with a 23:26 to place 86th out of 180 runners in the D-III race. Margaretta also competed in the D-III girls race. Senior Olivia Saylor led the Polar Bears by coming in 11th with a time of 20:18. Margaretta's next-best placer was Amyra Ruffing in 66th. St. Paul's Adele Dowdell came in 58th in the D-III girls race. Huron also had a top-10 finisher in the D-III boys race. Sage Edgerly-Bork ran 16:49 to grab the 10th spot. The Tigers' Jake Case came in 22nd (17:19). Margaretta's fastest boys finisher was Caiden Fultz, who placed 41st in the D-III race with a time of 17:59. St. Paul's Owen Thimke led the Flyers, coming in 63rd. The best area Division II finisher on Saturday was Port Clinton sophomore Morgan Wiechman. Wiechman ran the D-II girls race in 19:24 to come in 11th. Clyde had back-to-back runners seize 42nd and 43rd places in the D-II girls race. Laney Renfro ran 21:15, and Kayla Tischler finished in 21:18. Bellevue's Eva Hancock was the best finisher for the Lady Red, taking the 96th spot. The area's best D-II boys runner was Joseph Webb of Vermilion. He ran 17:00 to place 22nd in that race. Clyde's Aaron Clapp was 50th in the D-II boys race in 17:33. Bellevue's Alex Lovins was 66th in 17:54. Norwalk's girls ran in the D-I segment. Zuri Immel was 27th in 20:32, with Isabel Ott (42nd) and Maddison Trenor (44th) also in the top-50. In the D-I boys race, Norwalk's Casey Kromer ran a 16:39 to finish 29th. Danbury ran its girls runners in the open field for D-II/III combined, and Emma Redett was runner-up in 21:29. Maria Maringer placed eighth (22:33). Port Clinton's Charlie Simpson came in third in the D-II/III boys open race in a time of 18:13. Next weekend's big cross country race is the Galion Festival, which will feature a bunch of area teams.
