Tornados touched down locally

The National Weather Service indicated two tornadoes touched down in the area late Thursday evening. Neither tornado caused any injuries or deaths but resulted in damage to trees and buildings. Here's a breakdown, with details provided by the weather service: Tornado 1: Ottawa County/Sandusky County • Time active: 11:08-11:15 p.m. • Tornado path: Started near South Nissen Road north-northwest of Elmore, traveled southeast about 4.2 miles and ended northwest of of Lindsey. • Tornado speeds: Peak wind speeds reached close to 110 mph, classifying the tornado as an EF1 — the second weakest on the six-step tornado severity scale. • Damage: The tornado uprooted trees, downed tree limbs, damaged a nursery greenhouse and snapped power lines. Several homes were damaged by broken tree limbs. Tornado 2: Erie County • Time active: 11:47-11:48 p.m. • Tornado path: The tornado began north of West Lake Road (U.S. 6), traveled southeast across the road about 1,530 feet and ended in a rural field. • Tornado speeds: Peak wind speeds reached about 90 miles per hour, classifying the tornado as an EF1 — the second weakest on the six-step tornado severity scale. • Damage: The tornado broke off tree limbs, some of which fell onto homes in the area. One large tree limb partially destroyed a residence. Other recent weather events Thursday's two tornados mean a total of nine tornados have touched down in Erie, Ottawa, Huron and Sandusky countries since June. The other seven tornados came during severe storms on June 15. In that weather event, three tornados touched down in Sandusky County, three in Huron County and one in Ottawa County. Like this past week's storms, those tornados caused damage to trees, power lines and buildings but did not directly cause any injuries or deaths.
