Sandusky home catches fire

Update 8:55 p.m. SANDUSKY — Firefighters were called to a housefire in the 500 block of Huron Ave. (U.S. 6) on Friday. Just before 5:30 p.m., first responders were alerted to a report of flames and smoke in a second-floor bedroom of the structure. When they arrived, smoke was billowing from several second-floor windows. All of the people inside the home escaped uninjured. A dog was seen sprinting back into the home. The dog was able to make it safely back outside according to Sandusky Fire Dept. Capt. Jim Green. Sandusky firefighters, with mutual aid from Perkins Township Fire Dept., attacked the fire from the roof of the porch and entered the home through a side door. A firefighter had to break the door in to gain access to the stairwell. The fire was declared out just before 6 p.m. The blaze originated in a second-floor bedroom. That room suffered extensive fire damage, Green said. The remainder of the second floor suffered heavy smoke and heat damage. A loss estimate was not available as of late Friday. Original post 5:54 p.m. Flames and smoke erupted from second-floor windows of a home in the 500 block of Huron Ave. (U.S. 6) on Friday afternoon. Firefighters from Sandusky and Perkins Township responded to battle the blaze. It was not immediately clear if anyone was harmed in the fire.
