Historic peace vessel coming to Sandusky

SANDUSKY — Peace will soon sweep the shores of Sandusky. The historic Golden Rule, the first peace vessel of the modern era, will be in Sandusky from Aug. 8-10 and anchor at the Paper District Marina from 2-5 p.m. Spots are limited. The Golden Rule will be available for tours, interviews and sailing on the Bay on Aug. 9, depending on the weather. The Golden Rule was built in 1958 in San Pedro, California, and gained its fame as four Quakers sailed it out toward the Marshall Islands in an effort to halt the atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons. "We have recovered and restored the original peace ship, the Golden Rule, that set sail in 1958 to stop nuclear weapons tests in the Marshall Islands, and which inspired the many peacemakers and peace ships that followed," Golden Rule project manager Helen Jaccard said. "The reborn Golden Rule is sailing once more, to show that nuclear abolition is possible, and that bravery and tenacity can overcome militarism." A number of members of the Sandusky Sailing Club have supported the project, and one club member, Bill Good, serves as the vessel's first mate.
