Western grad Chafin traded to Brewers

Andrew Chafin, a 2008 Western Reserve graduate, was among the players traded ahead of Tuesday's Major League Baseball trade deadline. The left-handed reliever was dealt from the Arizona Diamondbacks to the Milwaukee Brewers. "Andrew adds an experienced leader and another quality left-handed arm to our bullpen," Brewers president of baseball operations Matt Arnold said in a statement. "He has had a long history of success against both left-handed and right-handed hitters, and we are excited to bring him aboard." Chafin, 33, has already made 43 appearances out of the bullpen this year. He's totaled a 4.19 ERA in 34.1 innings to go with 49 strikeouts. In a 10-year big league career, Chafin has a 3.31 ERA. Milwaukee marks Chafin's fifth big-league club. He's played for Arizona in two separate stints and has also suited up for the Cubs, Athletics and Tigers. At the time of the trade, the Diamondbacks and Brewers had identical 57-50 records. Milwaukee was 1.5 games out of the Reds in the NL Central, while Arizona is 3.5 back of the Dodgers in the NL West with the Giants also a game ahead of the Diamondbacks. Prior to his professional career, Chafin was a four-year letterwinner and the Firelands Conference Player of the Year in 2008 for Western Reserve. Chafin was also Division III District Player of the Year and All-Ohio first team. In his final high school game of his career, he threw a no-hitter at Mapleton. Chafin holds the school record for most strikeouts in a game (19), most strikeouts in a season (178), lowest ERA and is tied for most pitching wins (10). Shortly after graduation, Chafin was the No. 1 starter and anchor for the Sandusky American Legion Post 83 summer baseball team, which won its first-ever state title in 2008. Chafin went on to star at Kent State before the Diamondbacks picked him in the first round in 2011.
