Turnpike modernizing toll plazas

GROTON TWP. — Major changes are happening to the Ohio Turnpike's toll collection system. A new plan from the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission seeks to modernize the collection of toll fees. This plan requires more than 20 construction projects that will reduce the number of toll plazas. Additionally, upgrades to 20-plus toll plaza interchanges, including ones running through Erie and Sandusky counties, are planned. "The lanes at these interchanges are being upgraded with new electronic tolling components, including sensors and technology to read E-ZPass transponders, and to classify vehicles by the number of axles and vehicle height," according to a commission news release. The renovations will allow drivers with E-Z Passes to travel non-stop. Customers without an E-Z Pass will still be required to stop and pay for a ticket whether with cash or credit card. "The new toll collection system and the technology behind it are a big step forward in safety, efficiency and convenience," the release states.
