Mohr throws shutout in Ice Haulers' 7-0 win

PERKINS TWP. — Ethan Mohr's summer is flying along. The 6-foot-7 right-hander is working for Bellevue Schools during the day while pitching for the Sandusky Bay Ice Haulers. On Thursday afternoon, Mohr took a break from mowing to throw a seven-inning shutout as the Ice Haulers blanked Jet Box 7-0 in the first game of a doubleheader at Sports Force Parks. Mohr, who will be a sophomore at the University of Findlay, gave up four hits — three in the sixth inning — and struck out seven to improve to 2-1 in Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League action. He struck out the last batter looking to clinch the Hauler's 14th win in 27 outings. "My last start I struggled on Fourth of July weekend, got a little tired early," Mohr said. "I'm coming out here when I can to get games in and it's gonna help out when I go back to school." Mohr has started four games for Sandusky Bay with 27 strikeouts in 26 innings. He lowered his earned-run average to 3.46 with his 91-pitch effort. "A day like today I wasn't worried about the pitch count," he said. "Wanted to go all seven and get it done." Mohr needed some help from his defense to keep the goose egg on the scoreboard. He breezed through the first four innings without allowing a hit. Jet Box ruined the no-hitter in the fifth and started the top of the sixth with three straight hits. Cody Hultink and Brendan Guciardo singled and Michael Tchavdarov lined one over the head of right-fielder Sam Seidel for a long single. Hultink held at second and Seidel quickly hit relay man Rhett Stokes. Stokes wheeled and threw home. The ball skidded to catcher Austin Adelman, who tagged out Hultink. A flyball to shallow left and a groundout to first preserved the shutout. "That was a heckuva relay from Sam to Rhett to me at home," Adelman said. "When our defense is playing like that and Ethan's pitching like that we're hard to beat. "It's nice to have those innings," Mohr added. "You might be flying through the first few and you get one of those and you know you got those guys behind you and they'll help you out." The Ice Haulers scored two in the third, four in the fifth and added one in the sixth to erase any late-inning suspense. Seidel, Stokes, Eli Snider and Connor Ostrander each had a hit and RBI. Ostrander's triple was the game's only extra-base hit. Mohr and Adelman made up a Findlay and SBC battery (Mohr, Bellevue; Adelman, Willard). "He knows what pitches I like early in counts, late in counts," Mohr said. "I know he'll help me get calls as best he can." Adelman, who played in 29 games last season for Findlay, hopes to see much more of Mohr next season with the Oilers. "He was looking really good," Adelman said. "His slider was working, he threw a couple really good changeups and his fastball is his money pitch like always. It's tough to hit it." Mohr had a 2-0 record and appeared in 11 games last season for the Oilers, throwing 28 2/3 innings. He's looking for more. "I want to get in the starting rotation. LP: Polega 3B: (SB) Ostrander Sixth-inning burst propels Ice Haulers to sweep In game two, the Sandusky Bay Ice Haulers broke open a 1-1 deadlock in the bottom of the sixth with three runs to surge to a 4-1 victory and a doubleheader sweep. Stokes reached on an error with one out, and Chyran Humphries followed with a walk before Cooper Fierher was hit by pitch to load the bases. Ostrander delivered a sacrifice fly to right to score Stokes and give Sandusky Bay a 2-1 lead. Seidel, a South Central graduate playing at BGSU, delivered the final blow with a two-run single. Ostrander had given the Ice Haulers an initial lead when he led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run. Perkins graduate Ben Keller was sharp to earn the win on the mound. The Bryant & Stratton righty went 5.2 innings and struck out four, allowing a lone run in the second inning. Bobby Perebzak got one out from the bullpen before RJ Shunck, a graduate of Evergreen in Swanton who now pitches at Toledo, got the final three outs for the save. The Ice Haulers finished the day at 15-13. They hit the road for a three-game set against the league-leading Muskegon Clippers. Sandusky Bay is 4.5 games behind the Lima Locos for the North Division's second playoff spot with nine games to play, none against the Locos.
