School notes: VacationLand, Sandusky Elks scholarship winners

ERIE COUNTY The Sandusky Elks Club #285 has named recent grads Anisha Chopra of Sandusky High School and Justin Patrick of Margaretta High School its 2022-23 female and male Teens of the Year. In addition to plaques, each graduate was awarded a $400 scholarship. Eight other scholarships were also awarded to the following individual school winners: - Cameron Kaufman and Emily Mitchel, Perkins High School - Samarion Newell and James Peugeot, Sandusky High School - Jennifer Patrick, Margaretta High School - Kyla Garbe, Allison Blevins and Kennedy Schessman, Huron High School - Amanda Millis and Brock Gill, St. Mary Central Catholic High School - Adam Murray of Huron High School was awarded the "Coach K" scholarship in honor of his late coach Tom Kowaleski. ERIE COUNTY VacationLand Federal Credit Union recently awarded six scholarships to members graduating from high school this year. As part of the new tradition started in 2020, employees of the credit union arranged surprise visits to award $1,000 checks to each of the recipients. These visits included stops at Sandusky High School, a baseball game, three softball games and a student's home. Although many deserving students applied, the following 2023 graduates were selected: • Greta Gross, a Perkins High School graduate, is the youngest daughter to Mark and Pamela Gross. She is enrolled at Ohio State University to study finance. Greta's school activities included varsity tennis, Aquatones, Model United Nations, Move2Stand, National Honor Society and concert choir. Greta has volunteered for her church and many school events. She has extensive local work experience and is currently employed by Cedar Point. • Maxwell Hoover, an Edison High School graduate, is pursuing a degree in finance at Coastal Carolina University. His school activities included varsity football and baseball, as well as coaching biddy football for three years. Max supported Project OHgo, was a 4H member for five years and volunteered at local school events. During the summer months, he worked for Lee's Chicken in Sandusky. Max is the son of Sean and Julie Hoover. • Mia Kane, a Margaretta High School graduate, plans to major in architecture and minor in business at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Mia's school activities included varsity volleyball, basketball and softball, in addition to student government, National Honor Society, Students Against Destructive Decisions, prom committee, Yearbook Club and Spanish Club. She was also a member of 4H Club, Varsity M Club and EPIC church group. Her work experience includes her family's farm, local travel baseball tournaments and babysitting. Mia is the daughter of Scott and Chris Kane. • Amanda Millis, a St. Mary Central Catholic High School graduate, is the daughter of Mike and Leslie Millis. She will attend John Carroll University to pursue a degree in marketing or communications with a minor in graphic design. Amanda's school activities included varsity golf, basketball and softball, key club, Teen Leadership Corps, National Honor Society, student government, National Art Honor Society, and she was a Kairos leader. Amanda was also a church volunteer and a Red Cross blood drive leader. • James Peugeot, a Sandusky High School graduate, is furthering his education at Bowling Green State University to pursue his goal of becoming a school psychologist. His school activities included varsity football, wrestling and track, Swan Club, Gentlemen's Club, National Honor Society, National Technical Hone Society, Superintendent's Executive Leadership Academy and Special Olympics. He has worked for several local businesses and is currently employed by Humanetics as a welder. James is the son of Todd and Megan Peugeot. • Hannah Welch, a Vermilion High School graduate, is the daughter of Paul and Echo Welch. She is enrolled at Ohio State University to pursue a degree in law. Her school activities included varsity tennis, swim, golf and softball, art club, ski club and National Green School Society. She volunteered with the Leo Club, Mill Manor Nursing Home, Salvation Army and the Vermilion Fish Festival. This will be Hannah's third summer employed by Vermilion Power Boats. OTTAWA COUNTY In May, members of the TNT program gathered to celebrate the end of another successful year of mentoring at the Ottawa County Fairgrounds and included dinner, dancing, games and prizes. The TNT mentoring program provides positive adult role models to children across the county in all school districts. It is a program of the Family Advocacy Center.
