The Attic arrives in Sandusky

SANDUSKY — A new vacation rental property popped up on Sandusky's scene. The Attic recently debuted in a building also housing S & H Blinds & Floors, on Cleveland Road (U.S. 6) near Twin Star Entertainment bowling alley. Why "The Attic" name? It's located, by and large, directly above S & H. Its proprietors, spouses Clare and Corey Opfer, who also serve in management roles for this family-owned business, recently unveiled the 4,400-square-foot lodge to friends, family members and other community members during a grand opening. About 175 people went on a tour during the open house. The transient rental, a term for short-term overnight stays, can accommodate up to 28 people at once. It's mostly targeted for a large group, such as a family vacationing in town or a sports team playing at a nearby athletic venue down on Cleveland Road. It also can cater to day rentals, including birthdays and graduation parties. It consists of six bedrooms, three bathrooms, an open-floor chef's kitchen, dining and living spaces, laundry facilities, a game room, a multitiered deck space, a hot tub and other amenities. Walking through the property, iconic images from Sandusky's past line the walls, which help decorate this space. The entire Opfer family lives in Sandusky or the immediate surrounding areas. Clare provided some backstory, giving credit to her father-in-law, Ed, who built this home 30 years ago so he and his family could live on the premises of their business. "This made it easy for him to see the kids off to school, pop upstairs for lunch or nap times and really be present in his children's lives while growing up," Clare said. "Once empty-nesters and wanting to enter semi-retirement, Ed and his wife, Julie, moved to a smaller home down the street on Cleveland Road." Renovating the structure and transforming it into a lodge-like business fulfills a longtime dream for all involved. "Ed always wanted The Attic to have a cozy, eclectic feel," Clare said. "So, when planning, we involved him and the entire family in many of the decisions."
