Creamery rolls into Huron

HURON — Here's the scoop on a new place in Huron where customers can get hard-dipped ice cream. This past week, The Rolling Stone Creamery opened for business. It's located at 120 Main St. near the North Main/Huron Pier. Amanda Harkelroad, a city resident, runs the family-owned business. She's planning to enlist her seven children — Jack, Megan, Riley, Maddie, Joey, Jimmy and Beau — and her husband/their father, Joe, to help her throughout the summer. "We're excited to see the development that's been happening on North Main Street and wanted to add to it," Amanda said. "There's some really nice bars and restaurants there already, but we always thought North Main Street needed something more for the entire family to enjoy," she added. "There's not a better location in Huron for what we are doing: Our customers can watch the boats pass by, walk the lighthouse pier and gaze at the beautiful sunsets by the beach while enjoying their favorite hand-dipped ice cream from Toft Dairy." Initially, Rolling Stone will offer eight different ice cream flavors along with 10 toppings to choose from. It'll also sell many specials, including what's known as S'mores on the Shore, a massive ice cream concoction topped with hot fudge, marshmallows, cherries, whipped cream and graham crackers. Additionally, people can order all-beef hot dogs, chips, drinks, gift items and more stocked in a 23-foot-long travel trailer called an Airstream. "We love the look and feel of Seaside, Florida, and all the Airstreams that have been converted into food trucks in that downtown area," Amanda said. "We wanted to replicate that look in our little town by the lake." For Amanda and her children, opening the creamery fulfills a long-time dream for all of them. "Our daughters have always talked about how fun it would be to open their own ice cream shop, and now we're actually doing it," Amanda said. "The whole community seems to be excited about us building a fun place where people can gather." People can visit the creamery from 4:30-9:30 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays and 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays. What's in a name? Regarding the name Rolling Stone Creamery: • The part "rolling stone" — It refers to the actual Airstream travel trailer. "The one we purchased traveled across the nation with Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones while on tour, and we thought this would be perfect to bring to Huron," Amanda said. • The part "creamery" — It refers to the business selling ice cream.
