Experiencing Bike Week is a must

SANDUSKY — Before moving to Sandusky, my only real interaction with Ohio Bike Week was when my family and I passed the sea of motorcycles to Cedar Point. My cousins and I at the time would look out the window in awe of the colorful motorcycles that passed us, but the main highlight was when the bikers would wave to us excitedly. So when I was asked if I would like to accompany the Sandusky police on foot as they patrol downtown Sandusky during the block party portion, it was a no-brainer. It was an absolute "yes." When Friday night rolled around, I met Sandusky police Chief Jared Oliver, Officer Jose Diaz and Sgt. Bronson Lillo in front of City Hall. After Oliver introduced me to the two other officers, we began to make our way to Jackson Street Pier, where the band Sponge would be escorted to the stage by police. On our way to the pier, I noticed dozens, if not hundreds, of motorcycles lining the streets of downtown Sandusky. And no two motorcycles were the same, as they all seemed to be accompanied by unique details or minor quirks. After 15 minutes or so had passed, two officers were assigned to both sides of the stage as the band began to set up to perform. Diaz, Lillo and I were on the stage's right side; by this time, the pier was filled with hundreds of excitedly anxious people. It was a very peaceful night with everyone behaving and abiding by the law. Officers probably wish this happened each and every shift. Throughout the night, from start to finish, everyone enjoyed the music, food and spending time with loved ones surrounded by Sandusky's beautiful scenery. That experience reminded me why I have always loved Bike Week because everyone around me seems so happy and carefree.
