Margaretta celebrates 81 Polar Bears

CASTALIA — Margaretta High School's Class of 2023, over several years, had a meaningful impact on their community and each other. And, simultaneously, the community helped them succeed. Speakers during Sunday evening's ceremony drove that point home as 81 seniors closed out their high school chapter. "I highly encourage you to look around and find those who helped you make it to today," senior class president Jenny Patrick said. "Whether it be a coach, staff member, parent or friend, thank them for the role they have played in your life." Over the past four years, the class of 2023 has, over the past four years, spent more than 720 days together and saw achievements in academics, athletics, the arts and more. Specifically, they celebrated the football team's first playoff berth in 20 years and the girls basketball qualifying for the state final four for the first time in 15 years. "Through both student sections and pep rallies, the class of 2023 was able to bring the community together," Patrick said. "I can say, with confidence, that none of us on the field today are the same people we were when our stories began," Patrick said. "Along this journey, we've been blessed to watch each other learn and grow." She continued: "Even though it's been quite the journey, we grew up. Without even realizing it, we went from the little kids on the playground to the big kids. Through it all — from the trash can fires to the parking lot crashes and so much more that I cannot say today, this class has truly left its mark on the school." Superintendent Ed Kurt advised seniors to give credit where credit is due and set goals for their lives. "Make sure, before you leave here today, to thank the classmates who helped you with your homework, worked with you on projects or just provided a kind word when you needed it most," he said. Together, graduating seniors and underclassmen sang "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by folk musicians Simon and Garfunkel before graduates received their diplomas. Before officially becoming alumni, Patrick announced that the class's funds would go toward purchasing a new American flag to be hung in the gym of Margaretta Schools' new PK-12 facility, which has paused construction. "This purchase will allow us to leave a small part of our legacy behind in a graceful manner," she said. First-year Margaretta High School principal Jennifer Theis highlighted the class of 2023's various accomplishments, including their willingness to help others. "You've proven that success lies not only in accumulation of knowledge, but also in how you abide within the world around you," she said. "You've shown compassion, empathy and understanding through your community service projects, support for our younger Polar Bears, standing up for your peers and through the support of our various high school initiatives, like our very inspiring and impactful mental health initiative. You're making a positive impact on society. "You've blossomed into confident young individuals who are ready to face the world with an unwavering sense of purpose," Theis added. "Your dedication, passion and resilience have inspired all of us and reaffirmed our belief in the boundless potential that lies within each and every one of you." Theis concluded with an interesting, and timely, fun fact. "One last thing: Did you know that a group of polar bears is called a celebration?" she said. "Tonight is truly a celebration. Congratulations, class of 2023."
