SANDUSKY — Sandusky High School's Class of 2023 accomplished much during their high school years. "We've made lifelong friends, learned valuable lessons and overcome countless challenges to reach this point," said class president Ma'KyJah Lately during Sunday's graduation ceremony at Strobel Field. "We've grown and developed as individuals and are very equipped to face the world ahead of us." But Lately made sure to thank teachers, staff and especially families for her class's success. For instance, on a personal note, her mother sent Lately and her siblings motivational texts each morning, and her family has remained supportive of her ambitions. "It has helped me tremendously," Lately said. She then motivated her peers. "We must strive to be compassionate, empathetic and kind to ourselves and to others," Lately said. "We must embrace diversity and inclusivity, and work to create a world that is suitable for all. But most importantly, we must never lose sight of our dreams and aspirations. We must continue to set goals, work hard and persevere. We are all capable of greatness, and it's up to us to define what that means for ourselves." Lately left her classmates with a quote that inspires her: "Be the change that you wish to see in the world." "As we leave this chapter behind, let's go forth and be that change." she said. More than 200 Blue Streaks completed their high school studies Sunday afternoon. The stadium's home stands were packed as family and friends cheered for their loved ones. The celebration abounded with lighthearted moments, like several seniors receiving their diplomas from family members who work for Sandusky Schools. And, after receiving her diploma, senior Maleah Clinton took a selfie with superintendent Dan Rambler. But the Class of 2023 also remembered two classmates, Jvonna Prentice and Ashonti Sanders, who recently passed away. Two chairs behind the graduates remained empty with white cap and gowns draped over them to honor Sanders and Prentice. Family members of both students also accepted honorary diplomas on their behalf. Rambler imparted wisdom from his life to the graduating class. "The effect you have on others is your greatest gift," he said. "Be a positive support to others and help them through each day and every tomorrow. That's truly something I witnessed during my first year in Sandusky — we have amazing students who love one another and care for each other. Carry that on during your future and the opportunities you have." Principal Eric Talbot pressed graduates to not let anyone or anything stand in the way of their dreams. "You've been dreaming for a long time about this day, but what happens after this day is way more important than today," he said. "Commencement is just the beginning."
