Report: Man struck woman with cellphone

SANDUSKY — A Sandusky man is facing eight charges after two reported incidents of domestic violence on Wednesday. Anthony Shavers, Jr., 19, 1700 block Mills St., is charged with felonious assault, disrupting public service, retaliation, intimidation and theft, all of which are felonies. He was additionally charged with menacing and two counts of domestic violence, all of which are misdemeanors. Shavers is accused of assaulting a woman by hitting her in the head with a cellphone before leaving her residence. He then purportedly returned to collect some of his property and threatened the victim. He also allegedly stole two cellphones from her so she could not call the police. The first incident took place just before 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, when officers were initially called to a residence in the 500 block of E. Washington St. They arrived to find a woman with a laceration near her temple. She told officers that she and another woman were in her home with Shavers when he took the victim's phone, according to a Sandusky police report. An argument then erupted as the woman attempted to get her phone back. Shavers allegedly refused to give the phone back but later struck the woman in the head with it, the report states. The woman told police she wanted to pursue the matter criminally, and officers determined it qualified as an incident of domestic violence. The victim originally declined transport to the hospital from Sandusky paramedics. She later went to the hospital and reported to officers that her wound required two staples to close. The other woman in the residence at the time of the incident reportedly was not "completely forthcoming" with officers about what she witnessed, according to the report. Shavers later called police, requesting to give a statement over the phone. Officers said he would not be permitted to do so, and they needed to see him in person. He told officers he would only meet with them in person if they promised not to arrest him, the report states. Officers told Shavers no such agreement could or would be made. Less than eight hours later, at approximately 2 a.m. on Thursday, the woman walked into the lobby of the police station on Meigs Street. She said Shavers contacted her wishing to come to the residence to collect some of his property and she told him he could not. The other woman present during the first incident then contacted her, and it was agreed she could come over to collect Shavers property. When the second woman arrived, the victim looked outside and only saw the woman. She reported that when she opened the door Shavers came bursting through it. While he was in the residence, he purportedly threatened to assault the woman, told the woman to drop the charges against him and prevented her from leaving the residence, the report states. When Shavers eventually left, he reportedly took two cellphones from the victim. Officers later located Shavers at a residence in the 1400 block of Milan Road and arrested him. Shavers reportedly told officers he tossed the phone back to the woman during the first incident and did not intend to strike her with it. He also claimed the victim's injury was a result of her glasses cutting her, not the phone striking her, the report states. Shavers has an arraignment scheduled for 10 a.m. on Tuesday in Sandusky Municipal Court. He is being held at Erie County Jail. His combined bond is $88,000 according to jail records.
