PREP ROUNDUP: Margaretta clinches tie for 1st in SBC Bay

CASTALIA — Margaretta routed Willard 17-1 in five innings Wednesday to clinch no worse than a share of the SBC Bay Division softball title. The Polar Bears (16-8, 8-2 Bay) left little doubt, scoring nine runs in the bottom of the first inning. Margaretta totaled 15 hits and five Bears – Lilly Edwards, Mariah Fields, Cassidy Lane, Ellie Belak and Mia Kane – had two hits apiece. Kane drove in three runs and Jamie Opfer scored three runs. "To come back from two games down in this conference and have a chance to actually be alone in first place by percentage points is a tremendous accomplishment and a testament to what this group if capable of accomplishing in the next few weeks," Margaretta coach Dale Dawson said. Fields got the pitching win, allowing one run in four innings. Willard dropped to 1-15, 0-8. SMCC trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth before taking a lead on Garrett Flewelling's two-run double. Flewelling scattered six hits and walked none to get the pitching win for the Panthers (9-13, 5-7 SBC River), who scored five runs in the fifth. Senior Dominic Myers ended the game with a two-run single. Senior Dylan Myers had two doubles, a single and drove in three runs. Blake Finneran had three hits and scored four runs. Seniors honored before the game were Brock Gill, Kyle West, Mason Kolycheck, Dominic Myers, Dylan Myers and John Nicholson. Gill and West did not play due to illness.
