PREP ROUNDUP: Danbury uses defense, small ball to edge New Riegel

DANBURY TWP. — Danbury scored what proved to be the winning run in the bottom fifth inning to post a 5-4 softball win over New Riegel on Wednesday. Michaela Harris was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third before scoring the go-ahead run on an Ellie Fish groundout. Fish, who drove in two runs, got the pitching win for the Lakers, who improved to 13-8 overall and 5-7 in the SBC River Division. New Riegel got a two-out single in the top of the seventh before a popout to second baseman Sarah Collins ended the game. "We haven't beaten New Riegel in quite a few years, so this was a big step for us," Danbury coach Jim Fish said. "Ellie was very good in the circle and our outfield defense was very good." Lakers left fielder Maci Brown made a "spectacular sliding catch," said Fish, and center fielder Harris and right fielder Miranda Evans also had good games. Fish also pointed to the defense of shortstop Ella McDonald. The Lakers had only two hits — singles from McDonald and Alera Masters. "There was a fair number of hit batters and we stole bases, bunted and capitalized on that," Fish said. While most other baseball and softball games scheduled for a dreary Wednesday were canceled, Danbury was able to play on its artificial surface. "It just about rained throughout the game, but we were kind of blocked from the wind and the temps weren't horrible," Fish said. Danbury, which is a 2 seed in its district, needs to win three of its final four River Division games to finish .500 in SBC play. Buhro also won the 200 (23.05) to help the Rockets win the boys team title with 113 points. Genoa was second with 77 points, followed by Port Clinton (46) and Danbury (13). In the girls meet, Oak Harbor's Rylee McKitrick swept the sprints, winning the 100 (12.67) and 200 (27.52) as the Rockets edged Port Clinton for the team title. McKitrick also ran on the winning 4x100 relay. OH's Camdyn Fauver was a double winner (100 and 300 hurdles) and Port Clinton's Morgan Wiechman won the 1600 and 3200. The Redskins' Mia Sanchez swept the shot put and discus. Oak Harbor's girls scored 97 points, followed by Port Clinton (82), Danbury (44) and Genoa 31. It was the 111th Ottawa County Invitational, which continues its streak as the longest consecutive running track meet in the state of Ohio.
