Perkins students enjoy Earth Day lessons

PERKINS TWP. — Dozens of Perkins Schools students learned valuable Earth Day lessons from a local company this week. Sandusky Packaging Corp., a folding carton manufacturer, donated time and materials to educate students in 12 classes of students of second-graders at Furry Elementary and third-graders at Meadowlawn Intermediate. "In celebration of Earth Day, Sandusky Packaging did a presentation on 'Trees Into Cartons, Cartons into Trees,'" employee Connie Turinsky told the Register. "Each student was given a Colorado blue spruce sapling they planted in dirt and a box produced by Sandusky Packaging, played Earth bingo and made a sheet of paper and taught the students how important their role is as safe-keepers of their planet by recycling, planting trees, and taking care of the environment." The activities were fun for all involved. "We had a lot of fun," Turinsky said. "It was great to get out of the office and spend the day with students." Teacher Stephanie Mapus expressed her appreciation for Sandusky Packaging's lessons and shared about her students' enthusiasm for them. "The kids had a ball — they are still talking about it and love sharing where they have planted their tree," Mapus said. Sandusky Packaging team members who visited with Perkins students this week were DuWayne Howser, Jason Schmidt, Greg Norman, Cynthia Norman and Connie Turinsky.
