Oak Harbor High School gets Purple Star award

OAK HARBOR — Oak Harbor High School was among hundreds of state-based schools that earned the Purple Star Award from the Ohio Department of Education. The honor recognizes educational institutions that assist military families and veterans. In this year's Purple Star class, Oak Harbor joins Monroeville High School as the area's honorees. It's the third time overall and second-straight year that Oak Harbor High School received this distinction. Oak Harbor High School government teacher Nick Lance, who's also a child of a veteran, is the liaison for military students and families, principal Cheryl Schell said. Among the initiatives he's taken on in recent years has included creating a new wall honoring all district alumni who either are serving or have served in the armed forces. Schell explained more ways the high school supports the military. "Our Rockets participate in an official signing day to celebrate their future plans to serve our great country," she said, noting that a signing took place on Friday. "Throughout the year, we encourage our Rockets to serve their schools and our community. These Rockets take it to the next level and also choose their country and for that we are forever grateful and want to recognize this sacrifice." Since 2017, the Purple Star Award has been given out by a board that includes those in statewide education, veterans services and other organizations that help decide schools that are eligible. Schools that earn the award receive a special Purple Star recognition to display in their buildings. Each Purple Star designation will remain in effect for three years, according to state officials. To meet the requirements for the Purple Star Award, schools must designate a liaison between military-connected students and their families and the school.
