Let's celebrate president's 200th birthday

SANDUSKY — Join the Erie County Historical Society as it marks President Rutherford B. Hayes' 200th birthday in Sandusky with an in-depth presentation about the 19th president of the U.S. and his impact on the history of both our region and our country. Scholar Mike Gilbert will discuss Hayes' years as a small-town lawyer, a soldier in the Civil War, serving as president of the U.S. and his ultimate return to his beloved Spiegel Grove in Fremont. Gilbert is a retired teacher, having taught at Fremont Ross High School for 38 years and at Terra Community College, with Life Scholars, for 10 years. He also hosts the history roundtable series of presentations with the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums site in Fremont, where he shares stories of both local and national history. His first book is a fictional thriller that takes partly in Fremont. Titled "Double Down," it was published in February of 2022. The presentation takes place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 29 at the Sandusky Library, 114 W. Adams St., Sandusky. No registration is needed. The lecture is designed for all ages of the general public and will last about 90 minutes. Attendance is free.
