Survey: Firelands among nation's best hospitals

SANDUSKY — Sandusky-based Firelands Regional Medical Center recently received a 2023 Outstanding Patient Experience Award from Healthgrades. This places Firelands among the top 15% of hospitals nationwide for patient experience, according to Healthgrades. "As a receiving hospital of this award, we are proud of the hard work our care team members have put in to achieve it," said Sheri Johnson, Firelands Health's senior director of quality. "This truly is a team effort and is an example of Firelands' focus on delivering high-quality care." Healthgrades is an online resource for patients to find and connect with health care providers and hospitals. Consumers can search for top-rated doctors or hospitals and read what other patients have to say about them. For this annual analysis, Healthgrades evaluated more than 3,000 hospitals that submitted at least 100 patient experience surveys to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The surveys were for admissions ranging from Jan. 1 2021, through Dec. 31, 2021. Survey questions focus on patients' perspectives of their care in the hospital: from cleanliness and noise levels to doctor and nurse communication. Questions also include whether a patient would recommend the hospital to family or friends and their overall rating of the hospital. The award recognizes hospitals that provide an overall outstanding patient experience using data collected from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey of Firelands' patients. These surveys are the standard for inpatient satisfaction measurement for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and how success is measured at Firelands Regional Medical Center. Of the hospitals evaluated, 419 hospitals outperformed their peers, based on their patients' responses, to achieve this award. The medical center is a Verified Level III Trauma Center, a Certified Primary Stroke Center and is the area's only Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.
