PREP ROUNDUP: Margaretta girls win Polar Bear Relays

CASTALIA — Margaretta's girls outscored Tiffin Columbian 86-84 to win the Polar Bear Relays on Saturday. The Polar Bears' second-place finish in the meet's final event — the 4x400-meter relay — clinched the win. The Margaretta foursome of Grace Paseka, Dani Grunden, Julia Berg and Macyn Phillips finished in 4:34.79 to add eight crucial points. Columbian won the relay to score 10 points. Margaretta won the shot put and discus relays, led by Jenny Patrick. The Bears' Eden Palomo, Lillian Belak, Kenadie Saylor and Anna Gasser combined to win the 4x100 shuttle hurdle relay in 1:09.38. Vermilion won the boys championship with 93 points. The Sailors' Hayden Valenti led Vermilion to the discus relay title. Vermilion also won the 4x1600 and 4x800 relays. Margaretta's JT Patrick had the top effort in the shot put (52-4.25). The Tigers won Game 1 11-2, scoring seven runs in the third inning, before winning the second game 14-4. Huron's Eliza Maloney went 3 for 5 with three runs batted in in Game 1 and got the win in the circle, striking out nine in six innings. She allowed just three hits and one run. Emmah Shaw, Lauren Wainwright and Jayci Schmidt each had two hits. Shaw and Schmidt each had two RBI. In Game 2, Huron broke a 4-4 tie with eight runs in the sixth inning. Lanee Orzech scored the go-ahead run on a Wainwright single. Annabelle Herzog went 3 for 3 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBI to lead the Tigers. Maloney was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Alysa Wild and K Williams each had two hits. Wild and Jess Holsapple each drove in two runs. Gerber delivered a walkoff hit in the bottom of the seventh to lift Vermilion to a 5-4 win over Huron. Gerber's game-winning hit scored Logan Peterson and Cohen Mooney. Mooney went 3 for 3 to lead the Sailors offense. Thomas Cozzens went 2 for 3 and scored two runs for Huron. Kyle Auger went 2 for 3 with two RBI. Hannah Schimmoeller went 3 for 4 and hit a pair of inside-the-park home runs in the opener and Tatum Baumgartner was 3 for 3 with a triple and Karder Haas had two hits and four RBI. In the Rockets' last game in Pigeon Forge, Schimmoeller hit another inside-the-park homer as did Alyse Sorg, who scored four runs. Haas was 4 for 4 with three RBI.
