BGSU names new men's basketball coach

Bowling Green State University named Todd Simon as its new men's basketball coach on Wednesday. Simon was most recently the head coach at Southern Utah for the past seven seasons. Along with an interim season leading UNLV in 2016, Simon has compiled a 127-115 record in eight seasons as a head coach. Since the 2020-21 season, Southern Utah has a 65-28 record. They had averaged 4.5 D-I wins per season in the four years before Simon took over. Simon takes over for Michael Huger, who led the Falcons for eight seasons. Before his interim head coach role with UNLV, Simon was an associate head coach there for three seasons. Simon had gone to UNLV from the prep school ranks. He coached for seven years at Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nevada. During his career, Simon coached a number of NBA players, including Anthony Bennett, Rashad Vaughn, Avery Bradley, Christian Wood, Cory Joseph, Tristan Thompson, DeAndre Liggins, Nick Johnson and Jorge Gutierrez. Simon is a native of Fowler, Michigan, and attended Central Michigan for undergrad. He and his wife, Kati, have three sons — Rece, Raylan, Ryder — and a daughter, Sophia. Since Huger was fired, at least five BGSU players have entered the transfer portal, according to the Toledo Blade. The Falcons were 11-20 in 2022-23, including 5-13 in the MAC.
