Report: Man threatened to detonate fake grenade

NORWALK — A Willard man is in Huron County Jail due to threatening statements he allegedly made during a recent call to 911 dispatchers. Thomas Hicks II, 44, 4600 block Willard West Road, is facing one fourth-degree felony charge of unlawful possession or use of a hoax weapon of mass destruction. He is also charged with a probation violation. Just before 8:45 p.m. on Sunday, Hicks called Huron County 911 to report a disturbance at his home, according to a criminal complaint. Hicks purportedly told the dispatcher he was in possession of guns and grenades. He allegedly said he had pulled the pin on a grenade and was preparing to launch it, the complaint states. He then reportedly started counting down. When officers arrived, they heard multiple loud sounds similar to gunshots. Hicks was then seen exiting a camper on the property and was arrested on a probation violation. Inside the camper, officers located a training grenade and a container with live ammunition, the complaint states. The hoax charge was filed with the court on Tuesday. As of late Wednesday, Hicks is incarcerated at Huron County Jail. Records indicate he is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Thursday. His bond is listed as $35,000. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 18 months in prison.
