Edison's Max Hermes, Clyde's Overmyer named top wrestlers at SBC tourney

NORWALK — The star power at the SBC wrestling championships was indisputable, and nobody stood taller than Max Hermes and Lance Overmyer. Hermes, Edison's star senior who will wrestle collegiately at Rutgers, recorded four pins on his way to the individual title at 126 pounds. He was named Most Outstanding Wrestler in the Bay Division. "Max does what Max does," Edison coach Davy Hermes said. Overmyer won the 144-pound title, shutting out Edison standout and state top-ranked Marcus Medina 5-0 in a battle between two wrestlers who plan on competing for state championships next month. Overmyer was named Most Outstanding Wrestler in the Lake Division. "He's where he needs to be in every position — top, bottom and neutral," Clyde coach Cliff Andres said. "He'll beat you on your feet and on the mat. He's got a feel for positions that isn't coachable." Max Hermes breezed through the 126 bracket with four pins and became just the 15th wrestler to win four SBC titles. "It's not the one that matters," he said. "A couple more weeks before those matches come around." Hermes piled up big points before pinning Lakota's Lane Thacker in 3:39 in the finals. "The goal coming into the weekend was get 40 to 50 takedowns," Hermes said. "I got 40 in four matches today." Hermes will start the tournament series at next week's sectional as the top-ranked wrestler in Division III at 126 pounds. He'll be at either 126 or 120 for the tournament. "I already decided," he said. "Everyone else will find out next Saturday." Max's younger brother Abe finished first at 113, scoring a 10-1 major decision against Oak Harbor's Bodee Miller in the finals. Abe, a sophomore who won his second SBC title, is 18-1 after missing a large chunk of the season with an injury. Saturday marked the first time this season that he wrestled at 113. He plans to stay there for the next few weeks. "It was a little challenging," he said. "I tired to make it a couple times earlier in the year. This week we made a plan and it was a little easier." Abe had a bye, a pin and a 22-6 technical fall to advance to the finals. "I feel I need to get to my offense more," he said. "I'm not really going to go out and get 15 takedowns in a match, but I'll put up points. Kind of just go with the flow. My motto is, 'He shoots, I score. I shoot, I score.' " Overmyer took the mat ranked No. 2 in Division II at 144. Medina is No. 1 in Division III. Overmyer took control and used his strength to deny Medina at every turn. The Clyde junior scored all his points on back points and got the better of Medina in a late flurry in the second period. "He tried the Granby roll. He kinds twisted out and rolled right into it," Overmyer said. "I did well on my top game. I knew how to defend his moves. "I think I controlled the match for the most part. It annoyed me that I didn't get a takedown." A pretty strong showing for someone who was sick earlier this week, too. "I felt weak my first couple matches," Overmyer said. "I didn't like how I felt at all. I knew I had to get over that mentally. I made sure to eat something and hydrate." Edison's Kohen Horvath won by injury default in the finals over Bellevue's Clay Alley. Both wrestlers are ranked in the top six statewide. Bellevue coach Brett Adkins said Alley would be ready for the sectional tourney. Clyde's Will Stanley, who also missed a big chunk of the season with a stress fracture, won a 7-0 decision over Oak Harbor's Christian Paul in the 157 final. Stanley is now 18-1. "He's had a good couple weeks of practice and is having fun," Andres said. "I expect him to be on the podium (at state)." Perkins and Oak Harbor each had three individual champs. Finishing first for the Pirates were Marco Muratori (106), Wyatt Nemitz (120, third SBC title) and Kyle Magyar (215). Columbian senior Max Ray dominated the 190-pound division with four first-period pins. The former Bellevue wrestler will compete collegiately at Ohio University. Lakota's Braxton Quaintance, the runner-up at 165, was named Most Outstanding Wrestler in the River Division. Margaretta senior Seth Stanley put on a show in the final championship match. The red-headed showman recorded a couple athletic takedowns before pinning Hopewell-Loudon's Ayden Fetro in 1:22.
