Chiefs win Super Bowl 57 behind Mahomes-led comeback, late Butker FG

PHOENIX — The Kansas City Chiefs became the second team in Super Bowl history to rally from a double-digit halftime deficit and win. The margin was 10 in favor of the Philadelphia Eagles at the intermission, but Harrison Butker drained a 27-yard field goal with eight seconds to play to give the Chiefs a 38-35 win Sunday night in Phoenix. "This means a lot," Chiefs coach Andy Reed told Fox's Tom Rinaldi postgame. "I could kiss you right now, but I'm not going to." Early on, it looked like the Eagles would take home the Lombardi Trophy. They scored three of the four offensive touchdowns in the first half — two rushing scores by Jalen Hurts, along with a 45-yard touchdown from Hurts to first-year Eagles wideout A.J. Brown. They also had a field goal. But Kansas City benefited from a defensive score to stay slightly in the game. Hurts was loose with the football as he attempted to escape the pocket and dropped it. The ball took a convenient bounce to Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton, who returned it 36 yards for a touchdown. Earlier in the half, Patrick Mahomes hit Travis Kelce on an 18-yard TD, meaning Philadelphia led at the break, 24-14. Kansas City received the second-half kickoff and cashed in, finishing their five minute and 30 second drive with a 1-yard run into paydirt by Isiah Pacheco. The Eagles could only respond with another Jake Elliott field goal to go up 27-21. Kadarius Toney made the next two big plays for the Chiefs, first reeling in a 5-yard touchdown from Mahomes and then returning a punt for 65 yards, the longest punt return in Super Bowl history. Kansas City turned the short field into another passing touchdown, this one from Mahomes to Skyy Moore for a 4-yard score, to go up 35-27. The Eagles weren't done, responding with a 2-yard Hurts rushing touchdown and a rush by Hurts for the game-tying 2-point conversion, too. But Mahomes and the Chiefs had one more drive — they scored on every possession of the second half. That set up Butker's game-winning kick. "We figured it out in that second half, man," Kelce told Fox postgame. "We were flying around." Hurts' three rushing touchdowns set a Super Bowl single-game record for a quarterback and tied Terrell Davis for the most by any player in the history of the big game. Mahomes, who sustained a high-ankle sprain earlier in the postseason and appeared to aggravate it late in the first half, still managed to run 51 yards on his first four carries before a couple late kneel downs led to negative yardage. Hurts was brilliant in defeat aside from the fumble. He completed 27-of-38 passes for 304 yards and a touchdown while running 15 times for 70 yards and three scores. With the victory, Mahomes becomes the 13th quarterback in NFL history to win multiple Super Bowls. And Kansas City head coach Andy Reid is the 14th head coach in league history to win multiple Super Bowls.
