Stop by Studio by the Bay

SANDUSKY — A special occasion might only last a day, hour or minute. But one local woman, with her relatively new business, aims to help save any memorable moment for a lifetime. Sandusky-based Studio by the Bay preserves items from events like weddings, birthdays, funerals and other notable events. Nicole Grohe, the owner, then finds ways to create artwork that both recalls and retains a particular memory. With both the artwork and her locally grown flowers, she can make various, one-of-a-kind keepsakes. "Pieces can be made from fresh or dried materials," Grohe said. "I offer a wide range of products spanning from jewelry, paperweights, vases and much more. I source most of my materials from my urban garden, including growing my own heirloom seeds." Grohe notes she creates every piece herself, in a handmade fashion, "And no two are alike." "The majority of products contain preserved botanicals from my urban garden or are provided from clients," Grohe said. "I am able to make customized products and am open to trying new ideas. I also sell heirloom seeds collected from my urban garden. The seeds vary every year as I try to offer a range of varieties." Grohe then explained her company's origins. "Studio by Bay was originally a small-scale heirloom seed shop. I felt it was important to keep seed varieties viable by growing uncommon plants," she said. "Just like with animals, plants go extinct. Without people continuing to grow heirlooms, the diversity of our seeds globally becomes more and more limited. I love talking to others about their gardens and plants and the importance of plant diversity. I have been an avid gardener for over 10 years. I learned how to preserve and dry plants and seeds, finding that I had a large amount of materials stockpiled at one point." Grohe operates Studio by the Bay out of her home and urban garden. During warmer-weather months, people can find her at the Sandusky Farmers Market and on Jackson Street Pier during events.
